Social Sciences is very relevant to our everyday living and for everybody.

In this department we aim to develop responsible citizens, people who really live and strive to uphold the values of the South AfricanConstitution, and helping others to understand those values.  We want to prepare young people to take up quality global and leadership responsibilities.

We also help learners to understand their responsibility towards their human and physical environment.  We aim to help them to develop the skill to recognise the significance of making informed decisions.

With all the environmental and social challenges we are facing nowadays, it is important that people, in this case, young people, realise the importance of fairness, sustainability and equality.

In the Social Sciences Department, every educator fosters the importance of each learner and their attitudes.  We have dedicated, well qualified, educators in this department who can make a difference in every learner’s life whom they are teaching.  They are even prepared to go the extra mile when needed.

I began at Nigel High as a Fresh First year teacher in 1991 and have been with this school since then with a brief Sabbatical for 6 months to King David – Victory Park.  I have seen this school go from approx 240 students and 14 staff members to over 1000 learners and 40 odd staff members.  The school has seen many learners and teachers passing through its doors and each one leaving a different mark on the school.  There have been many high lights that I have been honoured to be a part of at Nigel High.  Many learners that have passed through our hands have achieved great success in the outside world.  I believe in the school and will always try to uphold its Code of Conduct to ensure learners become self-disciplined, well rounded young people prepared for life outside our school.  I have been part of SMT for about 13 years and believe that together the TEAM of Nigel High can achieve great heights.

In the department:

Ms Lekgau and Ms Khumalo – nurture and lay foundations for the Grade 8’s with EMS.

Ms Nkambula and Mrs Vala - continue the Grade 9’s EMS grounding.

Ms Jwambi and Mrs Moleko then takes the Accounting and Business Studies (respectively) for Grade 10’s to ensure learners build a foundation in these learning areas.

Mrs Vala, Ms Khumalo, Mrs Moleko and Mrs Nkambule continue the Business Studies support in Grade 11 and Ms Lekgau continues the Accounting aspect.

Ms Khumalo and Ms  Lekgau then finish off the FET phase with the Grade 12’s with regards to Business Studies and Accounting.

Mrs Erasmus enjoys teaching and nurturing the Grade 10 – 12 learners with regards to CAT (Computers) to ensure learners know their way around up to date technology.

Ms Leiee lays down an excellent foundation to Grade 10’s in the subject of Hospitality Studies and Mrs Olivier furthers this grounding in Grade 11 and 12.

Role of Grade Controllers:

Grade 8

From Primary school to High school is an enormous move and an even greater adjustment.  Here at Nigel High School you become part of the Blue Blood family:  here we prepare you to be responsible citizens that can play an effective part in the future, as an adult.

We build on the academic foundation laid down by Primary School and most importantly the norm and value system installed at home by the parents.  These two combined will determine the result at the end of Grade 12 after five years of moulding.

All Grade 8 learners go on a compulsory camp at the beginning of the second term.  At this camp a Grade 8 learner will effectively become part of the Grade 8 group, build friendships and everlasting memories!

Grade Controllers fully assume their role of loco parents to all learners.  All learners are blessed with a register teacher with a heart filled with compassion and understanding and subject teachers will provide the academic knowledge you need to become the best you want to be!

Welcome to the “BIG” school where you determine your own success!!

Grade 9

It is a difficult year with peer pressure, bodily changes, outside influences, societal changes, and status playing a big role in their lives.

This is an important year for our youth as it is the last year of compulsory school education and at the end of the year these learners write their exit exams.  Towards the end of the year these young learners will choose which subjects to take into the FET phase to ensure they are prepared for their future careers.
